Harvard Research: Menthol-Flavoured Cigarettes Used to Lure Adolescents


According to the report published by the Associated Press, tobacco corporations intentionally altered the menthol levels in their products depending on their target consumers. If the cigarettes were marketed to younger smokers, the levels of nicotine and menthol in them were reduced; while tobacco products to “hook on” more experienced smokers featured larger quantities of both nicotine and menthol. This information is based on a study conducted by scientists of the Harvard School of Public Health.

Women Are Increasingly Prone to Suffering from Tobacco-Related Diseases – New Research


According to ScienceDaily, smoking-related diseases and especially death rates among both American and European women have been on a significant rise within the recent decades. This troubling statistics show that aggressive anti-smoking measures that are being implemented in the US and such European countries as France, as well as worldwide, are not enough to prevent the spread of tobacco-related deaths among the global female population.

Canadian Cancer Society Advocates a Ban on Flavoured Cigarillos


According to the Canadian Press, the Cancer Society of the country has called for a ban on the favourite tobacco product of teenagers - flavoured cigarillos. After conducting a large-scale national survey, the Cancer Society has come to a conclusion that a large percentage of teenagers tend to experiment with smoking cigarillos, as opposed to ordinary cigarettes. The organization predicts that, if a governmental ban on this tobacco product is imposed, fewer teenagers will be attracted to a harmful habit of smoking.

New Animal Study Confirms That Smoking during Pregnancy is Major Risk Factor for SIDS


A recently conducted research has provided evidence that smoking during pregnancy can be directly associated with the baby’s risk for SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Although a link between prenatal exposure to cigarette poisons from the smoking mother and SIDS was suspected long ago, the new trial confirms that it can be a key factor in sudden death of the infant. Other causes include irregularities in the heart beat, disruptions of breathing, faults of the nervous system and overheating.

Smoking Teens Can be Prone to Depression


Although “conventional wisdom” states that smoking can be beneficial for depressed people, scientific studies show that, on the contrary, the reverse is true. A new trial conducted by US scientists has demonstrated that depression in teenagers can actually be caused by smoking cigarettes.
