New Anti-Smoking Vaccine Becomes a Reality

An experimental treatment for tobacco addiction, an innovative “anti-smoking” vaccine, will soon be tested in a clinical trial. A team of researchers from the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has already started to recruit smoking volunteers to participate in this groundbreaking study.

The nicotine vaccine has been developed to help smokers gradually reduce their daily intake of nicotine, thus diminishing their cigarette cravings and making tobacco less desirable. The scientists plan to recruit 40 participants in order to test the effectiveness and safety of the new anti-tobacco treatment. Alongside with receiving the vaccine treatment, the study participants may take other anti-tobacco drugs and will also undergo smoking cessation counselling at no cost.

The research team is enrolling healthy adult smokers who are willing to kick their tobacco addiction by following the experimental smoking cessation procedure. The duration of this controlled study is one year, within which the study subjects will be asked to regularly visit the research center for tests and monitoring.

During the study, the scientists will examine a potentially revolutionary approach to treating nicotine addiction. They will investigate if the vaccine is effective in helping smokers to overcome their cigarette dependency by diminishing the addictive effect of nicotine on the central nervous system.

Each year, millions of smokers attempt to break free from their harmful habit. Many of them try nicotine replacement therapy, counselling, and even antidepressants. However, only one out of every 20 smokers succeeds in quitting on a long run. Although most long-term smokers attempt to quit numerous times during their life, the percentage of those who have become smoke-free is still low.

Cigarettes remain number one cause of preventable death in the United States. It is estimated that more than three quarters of current American smokers want to unhook from their addictive habit. The innovative nicotine vaccine may become a truly revolutionary treatment to help smokers quit, which will substantially increase the number of those who have stopped smoking once and for good.
