It Is Never Too Late to Stop Smoking!
Many smokers try to get off their unhealthy habit when still young, but older people can successfully kick even a lifelong tobacco addiction, too. A study conducted by the UK Peninsula Medical School has revealed that people who approach the age of retirement can be the most successful group of smokers in their attempt to completely quit puffing cigarettes.
The research followed a group of 1712 smoking men and women of the retirement age over a period of six years. The scientists correlated the smoking status of the participants with their employment status (whether they were still working or not). The research, led by Dr. Iain Lang, has revealed that almost half of those participants who quit smoking during the study period did so just after their retirement from work, compared to about 25 percent of still working seniors and roughly the same percentage of participants who stopped smoking well after their transition to retirement. The results show that recently retired people are more likely to successfully give up tobacco than any other group of senior citizens.
Dr. Lang pointed out that, for many people, retirement is an important point of transition to a new lifestyle, which makes it psychologically easier to acquire health-promoting changes, including an increased physical activity, healthy diet, and a smoke-free life. However, he also added that people of other age groups should not postpone their decision to quit smoking until their retirement age. After all, the sooner the smoker quits tobacco, the less risks he will run in contracting a number of smoking-induced diseases, including lung cancer!
