We all know that ultraviolet sun exposure is the most serious risk factor involved in the development of different types of skin cancer. However, the link between smoking and skin tumours, although well-established, is less obvious to the general public. Previously held research clearly showed that smoking cigarettes could induce an additional risk of contracting squamous cell carcinoma - a dangerous type of skin cancer, typically observed in elderly people. A recent study conducted by researchers from Netherlands has revealed that, in fact, smoking can more than TRIPPLE your chances of developing squamous cell carcinoma!

New Studies Confirm That Psoriasis Is Triggered and Aggravated by Smoking

Since 1994, medical journals have started publishing research on a possible connection between skin diseases and smoking. However, only now scientists have been able to confirm that the onset of various types of dermatitis, as well as psoriasis, can, indeed, be triggered by cigarettes. In addition, it has been discovered that “heavier” smokers are at an increased risk of contracting psoriases than “lighter” smokers. Smoking cessation has been positively associated with a decreased incidence of psoriases, however, the risk tends to diminish slowly.

Is Leptin Responsible for Weight Gain After Smoking Cessation?

One unpleasant side effect of quitting smoking is a rapid weight gain. Studies show that, already within the first month after stopping smoking, ex-smokers start pilling up extra-weight, especially adipose tissue around their bellies. Unfortunately, in most cases, this tendency for after-smoking weight gain does not stop but continues progressing. It is estimated that, within five to ten years after smoking cessation, African Americans can gain up to 24 pounds of excess weight, while whites - up to 20 additional pounds. Weight gain is especially pronounced in female ex-smokers.

Stay Smoke-Free And Live Without Lung Cancer

If you are a smoker, consider quitting. If your friends or family members smoke, encourage them to quit. If you are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke, change your surroundings. Do not take it lightly - cigarettes cause lung cancer and smoking kills.
