Why Choose a Non-Smoking Life?
If you belong to the South Pacific nation of Niue, you can get paid for quitting smoking. As Premier of the country Vivian Young noted recently, it would be cheaper for the national budget to pay people for stopping smoking than to cover medical costs of smoking-related diseases.
He officially proposed to pay all smokers the amount of 2,000 New Zealand dollars, which corresponds to more than 1,543 US dollars, if they quit. During the Tonga South Pacific Forum, he told amused reporters that his propose was not a joke, but a serious offer. The country’s parliament is also considering to ban smoking everywhere in public places, offices, restaurants, and tourist areas, which should encourage many local villagers to quit using tobacco.
In Hong Kong, a recent survey determined that married men are willing to stop smoking for their wives and children. Almost 70% of them indicated that they had very strong reasons for parting with tobacco. 66% said that they abstained from smoking when their children were around, some said they would not smoke near their pregnant wife, and no a single smoking men wanted his kids to smoke. However, statistics shows that in families with smoking parents, children have a 66% chance to start using tobacco themselves. It is also interesting to note that, in Hong Kong, nine out of every 10 women living with smoking husbands would prefer to have non-smoking spouses, and almost half of all women argue with their smoking men because of their unhealthy habit.
And what’s about the top floor? As it turns out, even people with the royalty blood are willing to make sacrifices for their loved ones. Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark decided to quit smoking, since his wife Princess Mary was scared that the bad habit might kill the prince prematurely. In May this year, 39 year old Frederick obeyed to his wife and gradually stopped smoking. He also added more exercise to his lifestyle and more healthy veggies to his menu. However, the prince’s parents, Prince Henrik and Queen Margaret, as well as his younger brother Prince Joachim, have not kicked their tobacco addiction yet.
And what about YOU?
